As with all BOND Events, the Arc US experience centres around a series of private, one-to-one meetings between senior Architects and vendors that each have selected before the event. And this is just the start: you are all together for 3 days and 3 nights, away from all the usual distractions of projects and office environments in a uniquely relaxed set up where you can properly get to know each other. And this is where the commercial project trail really lights up. Because this is about relationships and connections and the very real collaborative possibilities that come from them.

Seminar - You Can Achieve Zero Carbon: A Leading Strategy for Your Firm and Clients
Vincent Martinez | COO, Architecture 2030
Synopsis
Rapid and major emissions reductions in the building sector will establish a powerful force for global action and business development. Widespread electrification of existing buildings (no onsite natural gas, heating oil, propane, etc.), in tandem with grid decarbonization and zero carbon new construction, will create a steady and predictable market for renewable energy generation and storage. A paradigm shift in building design and material selection can accelerate manufacturing industries to significantly reduce the embodied carbon of their products. Policies that reduce the embodied carbon of building and infrastructure construction in neighborhoods, cities, and regions have the potential to reshape patterns of consumption and waste. Through practice and policy, the design, planning, and building community must rapidly transform urban development and the built environment from the major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to a central part of the solution to the climate crisis. In the process, they will improve their market position and that of their clients.
Biography
Through his 15-year tenure at Architecture 2030, Vincent Martinez has been working to solve the climate crisis by catalyzing global building decarbonization efforts through the development and activation of robust networks focused on private sector commitments, education, training, and public policies. Vincent has facilitated the collective impact of a large spectrum of industry partners and organizations to create local, regional, national and international initiatives and programs.
Vincent has strong connections with private sector leaders in urban real estate through his previous role as the 2030 Districts Network Interim Director from 2013 to 2016, helping co-found the 2030 Districts model that has now been adopted by 22 North American cities and a founding member of the 2030 Districts Network Board of Governors. Vincent also formerly managed the development and dissemination of the AIA+2030 Professional Education Series, which provided design professionals in 27 markets across North America with strategies for reaching zero net carbon building operations and has since been developed into an online education series. Recently, through his work with the Zero Cities Project, a collaboration with national partners and 11 leading US cities, he led the development of Achieving Zero, a framework of incremental actions that cities and governments can put in place to ensure carbon neutral built environments by 2040.
Vincent is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and was the 2018 chair of the AIA Energy Leadership Group, a former member of the AIA Sustainability Leadership Group, and is the 2022 chair of the AIA Committee on Climate Action and Design Excellence. He was named an Emerging Leader by the Design Futures Council in 2015.

Seminar - The Green Building Advisory Committee: Sustainability Recommendations to Guide GSA

Synopsis
This presentation focuses on GSA’s Green Building Advisory Committee (GBAC), a committee of private sector design and construction professionals who provide advice to the General Services Administration to accelerate the successful transformation of the Federal building portfolio by integrating sustainable technologies. Their work provides the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings (OFHPGB) with recommendations and consultation as well as keeping GSA up to date on pertinent research and trends to further greening the global Federal Building portfolio. The intent has been to tap into the knowledge and experience of the Committee’s sustainability leaders from across the private sector to position the GSA to stay on the front edge of green design and technologies.
Biography
David Kaneda is an electrical engineer and architect with expertise in electrification/decarbonization, renewable energy, energy storage/microgrids, lighting/daylighting and smart EV charging strategies. He has collaborated on some of the greenest buildings in the US. He has led the electrical design for dozens of COTE Top 10, LEED Platinum, net zero energy and resilient buildings. He is a Professional Engineer, a Fellow in the AIA, a LEED Fellow and a Senior Fellow with New Buildings Institute and Chairs GSA’s Green Building Advisory Committee.

Seminar - Exploring Tall Wood: New Code Provisions for Tall Timber Structures

Synopsis
As interest in and use of mass timber in the U.S. has grown, so to has interest in pushing these timber structures to greater heights. Using international examples of successful tall wood buildings as precedent, some designers have proposed tall wood projects in the U.S. using a project-specific performance-based design approach. In order to provide a uniform set of code provisions for these tall wood buildings, the International Code Council (ICC) established an Ad Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings that proposed a set of code changes allowing up to 18 stories of mass timber construction. These code changes were announced as approved in January of 2019 and will become part of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC). Following a brief discussion of history and motivators, this presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption.
Biography
Mike received his B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1979 and was involved in the practice of structural engineering for a number of San Diego based firms over a span of 37 years. His experience includes design, construction administration, contract plan checking, peer review and forensic investigations for various types of projects utilizing all types of building materials. Mike has had articles published in Structural Engineer and San Diego Constructor magazines, has served as an SEAOSD Director, was a member of the SEAOC Code Streamlining Committee and is now Co-Chair of the SEAOSD Sustainable Design Committee. Mike is a licensed Structural Engineer in the State of California and is currently the Regional Director covering Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico for WoodWorks.

Design is… redesign, culture, a participatory system of total ecology engagement, adaptive, flexible, integrated, context, meaning-making, relevant, leadership, embodied and extended, ontological, relational, a sense of agency, a search for coherence, being lost and being found, learning and failure, creative, expansive and associative, purposeful and playful, experience-based, a facilitator of participatory knowing, entrepreneurial, interdependent, interdisciplinary, whole-brained, sensory, emotional, a time machine, a FLOW state, a talisman, a storyteller… Design is a way of being.
Biography
David Kepron is a multifaceted creative professional with a compulsive curiosity to understand ‘why’, ‘what’s now’ and ‘what’s next’. He brings together his background as an architect, artist, educator, author, podcast host and builder to the making of meaningful and empathically focused customer connections at brand experience places around the globe.
David is a former VP - Global Design Strategies at Marriott International. While at Marriott, his focus was on the creation of compelling customer experiences within Marriott’s “Premium Distinctive” segment which included: Westin, Renaissance, Le Meridien, Autograph Collection, Tribute Portfolio, Design Hotels and Gaylord hotels.
In 2020 Kepron founded NXTLVL Experience Design, a strategy and design consultancy, where he combines his multidisciplinary approach to the creation of relevant brand engagements with his passion for social and cultural anthropology, neuroscience and emerging digital technologies.
As a frequently requested international speaker at corporate events and international conferences focusing on CX, digital transformation, retail, hospitality, emerging technology, David shares his expertise on subjects ranging from consumer behaviors and trends, brain science and buying behavior, store design and visual merchandising, hotel design and strategy as well as creativity and innovation. In his talks, David shares visionary ideas on how brand strategy, brain science and emerging technologies are changing guest expectations about relationships they want to have with brands and how companies can remain relevant in a digitally enabled marketplace.
David currently brings his creativity and insight on brand experiences to an international audience as a member of VMSD magazine’s Editorial Advisory Board, as a Board Member of the Interactive Customer Experience Association (ICXA) and Sign Research Foundation’s (SRF) Program Committee.
In 2014 Kepron published his first book titled: “Retail (r)Evolution: Why Creating Right-Brain Stores Will Shape the Future of Shopping in a Digitally Driven World” and he is currently working on his second book to be published soon. David also writes a popular blog called “Brain Food” which is published monthly on vmsd.com.
In September of 2020, he launched a new podcast called “NXTLVL Experience Design” which brings listeners daring and different dialogues about “DATA: Design, Architecture, Technology and the Arts.” His guests include thought leaders who are driven by a passion to create the ‘New Possible’ and promote new paradigms of experiences into the mainstream.
