Seminar - It’s Time to Stop Tinkering

Pritpal Tamber | Writer, Researcher & Consultant , Community Health & Medical Information

Read More Read Less

Synopsis

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the inequity in most high-income countries. The people most severely affected were those with the least choices. The disparities in outcomes fell along the all too familiar lines of class, especially in Europe, and colour, especially in the US. Architecture’s response has been underwhelming, to say the least. Articles about ‘touchless tech’ and ‘living in harmony with nature’, reveal an industry struggling, perhaps refusing, to wake up to its responsibilities. In last year’s BOND Healthcare (Tucson, AZ), Dr Tamber argued that the future of health is not just about getting away from spaceship-sized-hospitals and towards smaller, more accessible clinical centres in community settings. It’s also about understanding how our neighbourhoods foster health. And rather than having elites (us) assume what that means (the usual assumption being greater access to green spaces), key to the work is engaging with empowered and vocal communities.

In this year’s seminar, Dr Tamber will show how the pandemic affected different communities, and what the organic, community-instigated responses were. He’ll relate that to his recent research on the link between community power and health and encourage the participants to broaden their thinking on what health is and how places influence it.

Biography

Pritpal S Tamber is a writer, researcher and consultant focussing on community health. His work examines the realities of bridging the health sector and communities. It is fuelled by the insight that health care is increasingly unsustainable because science and practice fail to appreciate how people and communities define their health. Pritpal writes a regular newsletter called Community & Health. It includes reviewing often-overlooked evidence, sharing the work of community-oriented practitioners, and commenting on work described as ‘community health’ or the ‘social determinants of health’. At present, he’s writing a series on the value of community power to health, which is informed by his research into the topic on behalf of The California Endowment.  His work builds on several projects that he has founded and run since 2013, including the Creating Health Collaborative, a highly curated meeting of community-oriented practitioners willing to share the realities of their work, and Community Agency & Health, a two-day symposium in Oakland, CA, that explored how the health sector might work differently to better understand communities. Pritpal is a former physician, medical editor and medical publisher, and also the former Physician Editor of TEDMED. He began his career at the medical journal, The BMJ.
