Wellbeing, Illuminated: The Pervasive Power of Lighting to Transform Interiors
BOND brings the world’s best architects, designers and manufacturers together to get to know each other better and to see what collaborative possibilities present themselves. Each has something to learn from the other, all coming away better-connected, better equipped and better-informed to meet future project challenges.
BOND’s AIA-accredited seminar programs take this learning and inspiration element to a new level by curating sessions from speakers who genuinely inspire us.
Here, as part of our series of posts from BOND seminar guest speakers, Lisa Bartlett, Lighting Director at AKLD Lighting Design, explores one of the most powerful yet often underused forces in the built environment: light.
We spend around 90% of our lives indoors, yet most artificial lighting quietly works against the body rather than with it. For designers committed to practising at the highest level, that gap represents a missed opportunity.
Lisa spoke at Arc Interiors in Anaheim in September 2026, with her session, Wellbeing, Illuminated: The Pervasive Power of Lighting to Transform Interiors.
Here Lisa highlights why this is so relevant to BOND’s architecture and design community:
“Why should you care about lighting?
Light is the most powerful invisible force in the built environment, yet one of the most underused. We spend 90% of our lives indoors, yet most artificial lighting quietly works against the body rather than with it. For designers committed to practising at the highest level, that gap represents a missed opportunity.
As we all strive to deliver more value to clients and elevate outcomes in a world marked by more content at ever-increasing speed, purposeful, human-centred lighting can take a project beyond form and function into something more fundamental: the felt experience of a space that supports us.
Lighting is my love language.
It shapes how we move through time, from morning clarity to afternoon focus to evening relaxation. It influences sleep, mood, cognitive performance and the ease that comes from inhabiting a space that simply feels right.
Imagine an environment that seamlessly supports us across the full arc of a day, not through technology you notice, but through the quiet power of what you don’t.
During my session, we examine how the circadian system works, why light is its primary signal and how that biological reality can shape spaces in ways clients can see, feel and articulate as value. Real-world projects help anchor the discussion throughout.
For designers, this creates an opportunity to think about lighting not simply as an aesthetic or functional layer, but as something capable of fundamentally influencing how people experience an interior.
Attendees can expect to leave with a research-informed framework for recognising where dynamic, wellness-focused lighting has the greatest potential to transform a project, together with the language needed to make that case to clients and collaborators alike.
Understanding the power of dynamic light is the first step toward designing spaces that transcend form and function. They can truly support the way we live, work, feel and learn.”
