Seminar - Designing for Luxury in the Era of Climate Change: Enhancing Mental Health by Incorporating Greenspace

James McKowen | Clinical Psychologist | Co-Chair Climate Mental Health Initiative MGB | Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Climate Health Resilience

Read More Read Less

Synopsis

As climate change reshapes our environment, its impact on mental health is becoming increasingly evident. This talk will explore the intersection of architectural design, climate change, and mental health highlighting the pressing need for architects to consider these factors in their work.

We’ll begin by discussing how climate change-related stressors, such as extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and existential anxieties are contributing to increasing mental health issues. The talk will highlight the importance of greenspaces in mitigating these effects, showcasing research that demonstrates how access to nature can alleviate stress and improve overall mental health.

Architects are in a pivotal position to design spaces that promote mental well-being. This talk will propose that, in response to climate change, greenspace planning should be an essential component of luxury architectural design. By integrating natural elements into urban and residential environments, architects can create spaces that not only withstand climate impacts but also enhance the psychological resilience of those who inhabit them.

This session aims to encourage architects to prioritize mental health by seeing through a lens of mental wellness in their design process. By bolstering adaptation to climate change, greenspaces support both mental well-being and climate resiliency. In short, session attendees will answer the following question: How would you design if you designed for personal and planetary wellness?

Seminar - The Sounds of Hospitality

Benjamin Markham | President, ACENTECH

Read More Read Less

Synopsis

The serenity of a spa requires a certain silence, but the treadmills and free-weights next door don’t abide. The wedding party is just jumping, but the front desk is getting phone calls from guestrooms upstairs: guests are upset about the noise. Does it have to be this way? Of course not. The sounds of hospitality are many: lively and engaging in some areas, a quiet refuge in others. Great buildings with a vast array of amenities do it all, simultaneously, and in the midst of the urban hubbub, too. In a talk that touches on site, massing, envelope, structure, interior design, and soundscape, explore the materials, structures, technologies, and acoustical design strategies that both engage and comfort the guest and enable 5-star experiences to coexist peacefully, jubilantly, and sonorously.

Biography

Ben Markham, FASA, LEED AP, President of Acentech, is an acoustics expert, lecturer, author, and industry leader. His over two decades of experience in architectural acoustics and noise control consulting spans a rich portfolio of award-winning projects, ranging from concert halls and rock clubs to classroom buildings, workplaces, and luxury hotels and condominiums. Ben also lectures and writes on topics related to building acoustics design, sound isolation, and noise control – in addition to his consulting work, he teaches acoustics in the Building Technology group at the MIT School of Architecture and lectures annually at the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art and Planning and at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Ben is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a member of the Acoustical Society Foundation Board, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a 2019 winner of the ENR National Top 20 Under 40 Professionals.
