In more recent years, the region has, once again, captured the world’s attention through ambitious development projects and iconic structures, with the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia emerging as global hubs for innovative and ground-breaking architecture.
So, what’s driving this architectural renaissance?
The economic boom, increased urbanisation and a surge in tourism to the region all combine to make the construction pipeline across the Middle East over the next few years nothing short of mind-blowing. In the UAE alone, the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and Dubai 2040 Urban Masterplan are creating a framework for over 1800 major projects worth just over $700billion.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is ramping up its diversification efforts under Vision 2030, leading to a surge in the rollout of huge-scale, or “giga” projects. Funded mainly by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), such ventures signal significant economic development, infrastructure enhancement and job generation.
